MAIN DATABASE

Main bibliographic-catalog database of the National Library is maintained in the INNOPAC system and covered (on March 14th, 2005):

629,950 bibliographic descriptions of various types of documents, among them 600,001 descriptions of monographs and of other types of documents (1,130,839 item records), and 29,949 bibliographic descriptions of continuing resources (41,252 holdings records);
661,793 authority records (NL subject headings - 69,186 plus 324,659 enhanced subject headings; and of names/titles - 267,948).

All records are created in MARC21 format. All descriptions are subject authority controlled by NL subject headings (available on the Internet at the URL: http://mak.bn.org.pl/w5.htm, database description - http://mak.bn.org.pl/info/info19a.htm). All descriptions of Polish monographs that are published in the current national bibliography, are also assigned UDC numbers.

The database, so far, covers some 30 per cent of monographic collections, and about 25 per cent of serial holdings, published beginning from 1801.

The database is systematically completed with new additions to the Library collections, and also with retrospective resource data conversion.

One can search the INNOPAC OPAC for the following categories of publications:

Polish monographs published in Poland since 1976, and registered in the current national bibliography;

Monographs published abroad beginning from 1994;

Polish and foreign monographs published beginning from 1801 (successively retrospectively converted);

Polish serials published in the supplement to the current national bibliography of monographs beginning from 1985;

Foreign serials, the majority of new titles published in the years 1987-1996, and Polish and foreign serials published in the years 1801-1986 (successively retrospectively converted);

Documents of social life;

Music and other types of documents;

Reference libraries of reading rooms and the Reference Center, irrespective the date of publication (descriptions of close to 30,000 titles, some of them in multiple copies).

Bibliographic-catalog database can be searched via Telnet in Polish or English interface:

telnet://alpha.bn.org.pl (automatic login: library) and via WWW http://alpha.bn.org.pl (no login required), without any restrictions (from December 29th, 2001 the National Library OPAC in the INNOPAC system is accessible without any limits of simultaneous logins). Both, Telnet and WWW access provide regular and MARC21 display of descriptions. The descriptions can be exported from the database via EXPORT function (or via any other method) in three data formats: full display, short display, or in ISO 2709 (MARC exchange format), to be saved on local disc or emailed to keyed in address.

BN database can also be searched with the use of Z39.50 protocol (configuration).

Polish monographs published in Poland beyond the censorship in the years 1976 -1989 (6,513 records in MARC BN format);
Polish electronic documents published beginning from 2001 (507 records in MARC21 format);

articles in Polish periodicals published in the years 1996-2004 (395,337 records in MARC BN format);
articles in Polish periodicals published in 2005 (3,702 records in MARC21 format);

articles in Polish dailies and weeklies published in the years 1996-2004 (104,697 records in MARC BN format);
articles in Polish dailies and weeklies published in 2005 (1,000 records in MARC21 format);

Polish serials published in the years 1985-2000 (10,246 descriptions of first issues in MARC BN format);
Polish serials published beginning from 2001 (5,242 descriptions of first issues in MARC21 format);

Polish serials published in Poland beyond the censorship in the years 1976 - 1990 (4,338 records in MARC BN format);

Foreign Polonica – bibliography of monographs relating to Poland and published abroad beginning from 1993 (32,745 records in MARC BN format);

2) Bibliographies of library and information science:

Polish bibliography of library and information science beginning from 1997 (26,398 records in MARC BN format);

Bibliography of Polish bibliographies beginning from 1995 (29,111 records in MARC BN format);

Polish unpublished bibliographies (1,572 records in MARC BN format);

Annotated bibliography of library and information science – foreign literature published beginning from 1990 (3,574 records in MARC BN format);

3) Union catalogs:

Union catalog of foreign monographs in the collections of Polish libraries published beginning from 1987 (141,344 full records in MARC21 format);

Union catalog of foreign monographs in the collections of Polish libraries published in the years 1975 -1986 (373,177 short records in MARC21 format);

Union catalog of foreign serials in the collections of Polish libraries published beginning from 1986 (51,764 records in ARKA format);

Union catalog of Polish serials in the collections of Polish libraries published in the years 1661 - 1950 (32,721 records in POLARKA format);

Codes of libraries participating in the NL union catalogs, 1,521 records;

4) Special collections:

Catalog of microfilms of early printed books published within the territory of Silesia, Eastern Prussia and Pomerania (11,644 records);

16th-18th century prints from the collections of the University Library of Wrocław, the National Library, Pomeranian Library in Szczecin, and Gdańsk Library of the Polish Academy of Sciences (34,944 records);

5) National Library Subject Headings Authority Files (73,662 records in MARC21 format);

6) Address directories:
