New IFLA Guidelines: How Can Libraries Effectively Support Media Education?

The National Library encourages you to familiarize yourself with the latest document published by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) – “IFLA MLCE Guidelines”. The publication contains practical tips for librarians on how to conduct effective and easy-to-implement media and information education (MIL) activities.
The report was created as part of the European project Media Literacy Case for Educators (MLCE) and aims to support libraries in counteracting disinformation and developing digital and information competences in local communities. Its findings were based, among others, on the experience gained during the media competence workshops Wszędzie (Everywhere), all the time conducted in Poland, Croatia, Spain, Romania and Ukraine. In Poland, the workshops were conducted by the National Library of Poland in the second half of 2024. The workshops were attended by about two hundred students of the Aleksander Fredro High School in Warsaw, students of the Warsaw Ukrainian School and young readers of the Pedagogical Library in Warsaw.
Key recommendations for libraries:
- use of existing resources – conducting educational activities without the need for large investments,
- adaptation to local needs – MIL programs should respond to real community challenges,
- cooperation with partners – engaging schools, non-governmental organizations and other institutions,
- scalability of activities – the possibility of easy replication and expansion of initiatives,
- education through activity – engaging participants in interactive forms of learning,
evaluation and improvement – systematic measurement of effects and adjustment of programs, - care for diversity and social inclusion – ensuring accessibility for different groups of users.
The document emphasizes the role of libraries as key centers of civic and digital education, supporting the construction of an informed and resilient information society.
