Presentation of a catalogue of musical works by the distinguished Lithuanian composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis

The study, written by eminent Lithuanian musicologist Dr Darius Kučinskas and published by the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania with support from the Lithuanian Council for Culture, represents the culmination of more than 30 years of research by the author, including his most recent archival and library findings. Arranged chronologically, the catalogue includes over 100 new entries compared with earlier listings of Čiurlionis’s music, making it an invaluable source of information for specialists, researchers and all those interested in Čiurlionis’s creative legacy.

The event will include a presentation of selected highlights from the National Library’s collections relating to Čiurlionis, including photographs from his student years at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts, musical scores and an album of paintings from the library of Nobel Prize-winning Polish poet Czesław Miłosz. Participants will also have the opportunity to listen to excerpts from selected compositions by Čiurlionis.

The event will take place on 10 October at 7.00 p.m. in the Palace of the Commonwealth, hosted by Sonia Wronkowska, Head of the Music Collections Department at the National Library, and will include a conversation with Dr Darius Kučinskas (in English).

Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875–1911) is perhaps Lithuania’s most outstanding artist: a composer, painter and graphic artist, recognised by UNESCO as a seminal figure who exerted a profound influence on culture. For many years, his legacy – encompassing remarkable paintings, musical compositions, literary works and above all his visionary combinations of sound, colour and symbolism – has captivated curators, writers and art critics.

In the new catalogue, Dr Darius Kučinskas presents an insightful overview of Čiurlionis’s major contribution to music and a comprehensive chronology of his works, providing valuable information on the creative legacy of this outstanding artist.
