Tomasz Makowski elected Chairman of the Conference of Directors of National Libraries (CDNL)

Directors of national libraries from around the world elected Tomasz Makowski, director of the National Library of Poland, as chairman of the Conference of Directors of National Libraries (CDNL) at a meeting on June 5, 2025. For the first time, a Pole has been appointed to the position.

CDNL, Conference of Directors of National Libraries, an independent association of over 100 directors of national libraries in the world, was established to enable cooperation, exchange of experiences and discussion on topics common to all national libraries in the world.

The CDNL chairperson for 2023–2025 was Marie-Louise Ayres, director of the National Library of Australia, and the vice-chairpersons were Leslie Weir (director of the National Library and Archives of Canada, IFLA president-elect) and, since 2004, director Tomasz Makowski.

Before Marie-Louise Ayres, the CDNL chairpersons were directors of national libraries of the Netherlands, Finland, Switzerland, South Africa, New Zealand, Denmark and Brazil.

Every year, the CDNL meeting takes place during the international congress of IFLA – the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions. The next CDNL meeting will be held in August in Astana, Kazakhstan.
