Wiesław Myśliwski. Meeting with the Master at the Palace of the Commonwealth

On Thursday, 11 June 2026, a special evening dedicated to Wiesław Myśliwski, one of the most important contemporary Polish writers, was held at the Palace of the Commonwealth. Myśliwski is an author whose prose has for years offered a space for reflection on memory, fate, language and human experience.

The event, entitled Wiesław Myśliwski. Meeting with the Master, brought together people for whom the works of the author of Stone upon Stone, Horizon, A Treatise on Shelling Beans and The Needle’s Eye are not only a subject of literary reflection, but also an important point of reference in thinking about culture. The discussion, moderated by Dominika Kozłowska, President of Znak Publishing House, and Jerzy Illg, the author’s long-time editor and friend, featured Dr Karolina Wawer, Professor Roch Sulima, editor Wojciech Bonowicz and Professor Stanisław Baj.

The evening was both commemorative and literary in character. The speakers reflected on the significance of Wiesław Myśliwski’s work in Polish literature, as well as on their own encounters with his writing. They emphasised the importance of words in his prose, his attentiveness to human fate, and his ability to speak about the most essential matters in a language that appears simple, yet is deeply moving.

A particularly memorable part of the event was the reading of excerpts from Wiesław Myśliwski’s books by Grażyna Barszczewska and Robert Więckiewicz. The musical setting for the evening was provided by Adam Pierończyk, a musician especially appreciated by the writer.

The venue itself was an important context for the event. The Palace of the Commonwealth at 3/5 Krasińskich Square, one of the seats of the National Library, is home to its treasury and presents some of the most valuable achievements of Polish literature. The meeting dedicated to Wiesław Myśliwski thus gained an additional meaning: a conversation about an outstanding master of words took place in a space that preserves the memory of Polish culture, literature and language.

For those who were unable to attend the event, a recording of the meeting is available on YouTube.

We also encourage you to read the remembrance of Wiesław Myśliwski.
