Jakkolwiek wyjeżdżał później z niego wielokrotnie, to właśnie tam spędził wiele twórczych lat swojego życia, tam zdobył sławę, tam też umarł i został pochowany. Prezentowana wizytówka z około 1836 roku oprócz imienia i nazwiska kompozytora zawiera też jeden z jego paryskich adresów: „38, rue de la Chaussée d’Antin”. Chopin mieszkał tam wspólnie z Janem Matuszyńskim, lekarzem, przyjacielem z dzieciństwa. Ich gościem bywały największe sławy ówczesnego życia muzycznego, np. wybitny kompozytor i pianista-wirtuoz Ferenc Liszt. Obiekt pochodzi z albumu malarki Zofii Ossolińskiej z Chodkiewiczów, w którym zebrała m.in. listy, ulotki, afisze, programy koncertów, grafiki, nuty, wycinki z gazet, zasuszone kwiaty, a także wizytówki. Kolekcja ta trafiła do Biblioteki Narodowej w 1946 roku.

Visiting Card of Fryderyk Chopin

A memento of Chopin’s life in Paris, a city which in his day was not just the most important destination for the Great Emi- gration of Poles and Lithuanians in the mid-nineteenth century, but also the cul- tural capital of the world. Chopin arrived in Paris in September 1831. Although he often travelled away from the city later in life, it was here that he spent many of his most creative years, here that he gained fame, and here that he died and was buried.

The visiting card dates from around 1836. In addition to the composer’s name, it gives one of his addresses in Paris: 38, rue de la Chaussée d’Antin. Chopin lived here with the doctor Jan Matuszyński, a childhood friend. There, they were vis- ited by some of the greatest figures in musical life at the time, such as the emi- nent composer and virtuoso pianist Franz Liszt.

This visiting card comes from the album of the painter Zofia Ossolińska (née Chod- kiewicz). Her album contains items such as letters, leaflets, posters, concert programmes, prints, musical scores, news- paper cuttings, dried flowers and visiting cards. It became part of the National Library’s of Poland collection in 1946.
